The Global Risks and Challenges of Legacy Systems: Healthcare’s Digital Prescription

Latest Healthcare Report "Healthcare's Digital Dilemma: Calculated Risks and Hidden Challenges Exposed"

The healthcare industry has a critical goal: to improve patient outcomes. Now, it’s on the verge of a technological breakthrough to do just that.

The industry recognizes the diversified and life-changing benefits modern technology offers, specifically with the expanded use of artificial intelligence (AI). However, many organizations remain anchored to outdated, problematic legacy systems, rendering them unable to embrace true digitization or maximum impact.

Despite the challenges of legacy systems, SOTI’s latest healthcare report, Healthcare’s Digital Dilemma: Calculated Risks and Hidden Challenges Exposed, reveals how IT decision makers in global healthcare organizations leverage AI.

60% of IT decision makers use AI to process and analyze medical data. 59% use it to update patient records. 40% use it to diagnose medical conditions.

Yet, there are still security challenges and pain points in the sector. To help close the technology gap that exists and reduce patient risks, the sector must invest in strong Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solutions for full device visibility, operational intelligence and remote troubleshooting.

Smarter Tech, Better Outcomes

AI use in healthcare has spiked by 20% in the past year since SOTI’s last healthcare report:

*In 2025, 81% of healthcare organizations now use AI in patient care.

This signals a major shift in budget allocation and strategic approaches. This adoption represents a positive change in the attitude toward AI and its productivity benefits, not only in performing administrative tasks but in personalizing treatment, diagnosing medical conditions, and updating patient records. While reservations still exist in the security and protection of patient data, it’s clear that AI as a tool is here to stay. However, how healthcare organizations effectively use and securely apply it long term remains uncertain.

The Future Can't Run on Legacy

Globally, 96% of IT leaders reported challenges with legacy systems, IoT, and telehealth.

*Specifically, over 95% face implementation challenges with IoT/telehealth medical devices.

The use of unintegrated, outdated systems for IoT and telehealth medical devices is highest in Australia at 77%, the UK at 73%, and Canada at 71%. By clinging to this software, healthcare organizations struggle to centralize information and management, leading to interoperability challenges such as accessing real-time patient data all in one place. Furthermore, security vulnerabilities are ever increasing. Globally, 59% of organizations face downtime/tech issues, and 45% of IT decision makers say legacy systems make networks vulnerable to attacks.

To overcome system integration issues and security vulnerabilities, healthcare organizations need to look toward modern mobile management solutions.

MDM to EMM – Managing Mobility Right

Healthcare organizations need a comprehensive approach to manage and secure a wide range of mobile devices, including printers, tablets, RFID readers, scanners and smartphones. However, the latest SOTI report illuminates the growing challenge IT staff have with device management. Currently, 38% say they cannot deploy and manage new devices/printers, 38% cannot support devices remotely or get detailed information on device issues, and 39% are spending too much time fixing issues.

The research also sheds light on countries that struggle with device management, with the UK (47%), Canada (46%) and Australia (43%) having the most issues deploying and managing new devices/printers, well above the global average. This is where current Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions are failing and enhanced EMM solutions can make a lasting impact.

Managing shared device security remains a leading IT issue. Basic MDMs no longer meet the demands of today’s complex digital environment,” says Stephanie Lopinski, VP of Global Marketing at SOTI. “With more devices, users and field workers, healthcare must adopt EMM solutions for centralized deployment, security and management. Only then can IT leaders ensure scalable, secure and compliant operations.
